Desert Rangers
From Desolation
The Desert Rangers are a survivalist organization. While they try to help out who they can, they are certainly not the police force of New Nevada. They're far more concerned with their own well-being and that of the Ranger Center community, whom they are the police force of.
The Desert Rangers were originally derived from prewar United States Army Core of Engineers that survived the nuclear holocaust in an old prison. Afterwards, they made the prison their home and a community formed around it. It's no secret that the Rangers change quite a bit in style and policy with each new leader, however they typically lean towards a vaguely paramilitary bend, as one can guess from their use of military ranks and an unhealthy love for the color Olive Drab.
Despite appearances, the Desert Rangers are not an army per se, as their paramilitary attributes are more used for order and a sense of tradition, and while they do arm their enlisted members and have dedicated soldiers, they're more known for engineering prowess despite the lack of dedicated manufacturing facilities in their possession; the one in the Ranger Center basement being an exception. While the organization does provide training, whether from personnel that offer it or from limited(see very limited) tutorials from the miraculously still functioning library computer, it is not mandatory in the least bit unless one wishes to join a specialist career.
In 2087, a band of Desert Rangers saved all of New Nevada and possibly the entire world from an army of robots created by an A.I. This fact has all but faded into obscurity by now...
Enlisted Rangers(as in those who aren't just civilians living in the RC community) are not full-time, in fact working more like reservists. Typical shifts are two weeks on, two weeks off. Some of the more "hardcore" Rangers will take shifts of six weeks on and only three weeks off. This is all, of course, if they aren't called back into duty in an emergency situation. Rangers have a few career paths:
Enlisted Forces:
Normally used as a catchall term for all on-duty Rangers, Enlisted are in itself a career that does all the tasks that don't require the attention of specialist groups, those tasks being: guard duty, patrols, administrative duties, scouting parties, communications, and combat should such a situation arise. Roughly less than half of the Rangers are part of the Enlisted group.
Engineering Crews:
Perhaps the most numerous among the specialist careers, Engineering Crews are sometimes seen as the true Rangers in the faction, their roots going back to the original founding Desert Rangers training and expertise. Main duties revolve around anything technical; building and vehicle maintenance, construction, explosive use and disposal, firearm modification and repair, and in some cases - Electronics. Engineers that volunteer for field duty are expected to have some proficiency in self-defense, although not a whole lot.
Medical Corps:
The Desert Ranger Medical Corps may not be the pride of the New Nevada Desert Rangers(at least publicly), they have an infamy all their own. As one can guess, they're the Rangers to turn to should someone need any kind of medical attention, from broken bones to field surgery. Like their technical counterparts, field medics are expected to have some basic knowledge of self-defense, but not much.
Enforcer Squads:
See Ranger Enforcers.
Leader:
General William Kurtz (In absentia)
Major Mitchel Anderson (Current)
HQ: Ranger Center
Elite: Ranger Enforcers
